A local scale analysis of manganese nodules influence on the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone macrobenthos

The present investigation focuses on the Global Sea Mineral Resources contract area B4S03 site in Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone nodule fields. We investigated sedimentary characteristics and higher-taxon (order/class) lower-taxon (family, morphospecies) diversity of soft sediment macrobenthos with special focus dominant taxa (Isopoda, Polychaeta, Tanaidacea) relation to abundance. Across all analyses no consistent and/or significant differences between two nodule-rich free stations were found terms abiotic or biotic factors, suggesting that both habitat-types have similar conditions macrofauna is represented by comparable densities across stations. Rarefaction/accumulation curves sample coverage analysis shows current sampling effort was insufficient characterize at morphospecies level but covered >90% family for three taxa. high number singletons encountered, patchiness low coupled logistically limited potential replication per habitat/station, may point under-sampling bias study risk underestimate species overestimate endemism. recommend a more extensive combination molecular tools taxonomical expertise. • GSR nodule-free are characterized parameters. showed station. taxa's level.
